Bulgaria

The ancient and spectacular Plovdiv Amphitheater.

Bulgaria is a medium size country located in a prominent position of Eastern Europe, surrounded by numerous countries and the Black Sea. Bulgaria has always been a well-placed land, seen as a stepping stone between Asia and Europe where boats weren't needed to traverse the two continents. For this reason, Bulgaria has had a great many years of occupation by all the big players of our time, producing a country of great ethnic and cultural diversity.

Due to the extremes of the geography of the land, the climate in Bulgaria is also pretty varied. The southern coastal areas are bordering on Mediterranean climate, so not quite as hot as Spain or Italy but enjoying long, hot and dry summers. The mountain ranges above 2000m get plenty of snow through wintertime, which has encouraged many ski resorts to blossom. Spring times are pleasant and sunny and autumn time is mild.

Bulgaria has been a hidden gem for many years, oppressed by communism until 1989 and difficult to reach. It is only now that the diversity of the country as a potential investment opportunity has come to light.

Just three hours from the UK, Bulgaria has one of Europe's fastest growing economies and a thriving property market as a result of a booming reputation amongst UK and International tourist industries.

With its recent entry into the EU this unrivalled expansion is set to continue and with a high level of secured International investment Bulgaria is sure to live up to its name as the Europe's leading investment hot spot.

Bulgarian property offers attractive rental returns. Visitors to Bulgaria from the UK have doubled every year since 2002 and a staggering 1.2 million British tourists are expected to choose Bulgaria as their destination for a genuinely awe-inspiring summer or winter holiday in 2008.

Bulgaria is only just still emerging as an exciting market with property prices unobtainable in other areas of the world. The prices are rising steadily and investors are looking forward to excellent returns in the future.

Many of the main UK airports have direct flights to Bulgaria, with an increasing number of airlines introducing flights to the main airports of Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv and Burgas. Flight times from the UK are approximately 3 hours. Direct flights from the UK are available from numerous airlines, as well as some charter carriers.

The currency in Bulgaria is the Lev (Lv), which is divided into 100 stotinki. Bulgaria is still mostly a cash economy although credit cards are accepted increasingly more often with the influx of tourists and their plastic. It is advisable to exchange currency in banks or hotels. There is a lot of speculation about Bulgaria taking the Euro currency and it is thought that the old currency will be phased out over the next few years with the Euro taking over around 2010.

Bulgaria's ski resorts are only just coming to the fore as places for ski enthusiasts to visit following the lifting of the iron curtain in 1989. There are numerous resorts around the country, which are now seeing investment into thefacilities as well as private investors developing hotels, apartments and chalets.

Historic BulgariaThe main cities of Bulgaria include the capital of Sofia and Plovdiv in the west and Varna on the east coast. Each of them interesting places with the old, traditional areas to explore and the modern boulevards to meander along, inviting visitors to stop at the street cafes for refreshments.

The fact that the country is bursting with natural springs and thermal spas may be one of the reasons that the Romans and Ottomans hung around for so long. With the healthy, clean mountain air, the spas of Bulgaria are becoming ever popular and chic boutique hotels and spa facilities are popping up all over encouraging the fans of city breaks to turn their attention to some serious time-out relaxation.

Well known spa towns include Kyustendil, Velingrad, Bansko and Dolna Banya. In each of the towns you'll find luxurious spa hotels and centres offering a host of treatments such as underwater massage, Thalassotherapy, body wrapping and reflexology. It's also one of the nicest ways to relax and chill out.
